The Standard Turtle Island Tour Timeline
Timings flex slightly with your hotel location and the boat schedule, but a typical morning tour looks like this. Pickup from Nusa Dua or Tanjung Benoa hotels is around 09:00–09:30; Seminyak and Uluwatu pickups start a little earlier to allow for the drive. By roughly 10:00 you are at Tanjung Benoa beach boarding your glass bottom boat — private charters run at IDR 500,000 per boat for up to nine people, so a family shares one boat, not a crowd.
The crossing itself takes about fifteen minutes, with a fish-feeding stop over the reef on the way. You then spend around an hour on the island meeting the resident sea turtles before cruising back. Guests who add watersports — banana boat from IDR 110K, jet ski from IDR 235K — do those next, followed by lunch. By 14:30–15:00 the tour is finished and your driver is ready, either to return you to your hotel or to carry straight on with your evening plan.
Why Finishing by 15:00 Is the Sweet Spot
The drive from Tanjung Benoa or Nusa Dua to Uluwatu takes 45–60 minutes, and the Kecak fire dance at the temple starts around 18:00–18:30, timed to sunset. So a 15:00 finish gives you close to three hours of margin — enough to go back to your hotel first, shower off the salt water, change, and still arrive at Uluwatu with time to walk the clifftop before the performance. Families with young children appreciate that buffer more than anyone; nobody enjoys rushing a toddler out of swimwear in a car park.
If your hotel is already in Uluwatu, it is even simpler: your driver drops you home by around 16:00 and sunset is on your doorstep.
A Sample Afternoon-to-Evening Plan
Here is the schedule we suggest most often to guests connecting the tour with sunset and dinner:
- 14:30–15:00 — Tour ends at Tanjung Benoa; meet your driver.
- 15:00–16:15 — Return to your hotel to shower and change (optional but recommended with kids).
- 16:30 — Depart for Uluwatu Temple.
- 17:15–17:30 — Arrive, buy temple entry, walk the cliff path.
- 18:00–19:15 — Sunset and the Kecak fire dance (roughly 60–70 minutes).
- 19:30 — Drive down to Jimbaran Bay, 30–40 minutes.
- 20:00 — Grilled seafood dinner on the beach, feet in the sand.

Adding several watersports rides can push the finish 30–60 minutes later — worth it for teenagers, worth skipping if sunset is the priority. Sea conditions occasionally adjust boat departures by a short window.
