Yes — you can visit Turtle Island and still catch the Uluwatu Kecak fire dance at sunset, all in one relaxed day. The formula is simple: glass bottom boat from Tanjung Benoa in the morning, a slow lunch and rest through the midday heat, then a 45–60 minute drive to Uluwatu to arrive by 5 pm. It is the single most requested route among our guests staying in Nusa Dua, Uluwatu and Seminyak, and the timing works beautifully.
I plan this day several times a week for families and couples, so let me walk you through it hour by hour — and explain why the order matters more than most people think.
Why Morning Turtle, Sunset Uluwatu — Not the Other Way Around
The sequence is not a matter of taste. It is set by nature. The sea off Tanjung Benoa is at its calmest in the morning, before the wind picks up — smoother for the boat, clearer through the glass floor, easier for small children and grandparents. Boats run through the day, but the 9 am departures get the best of it.
The Kecak dance, meanwhile, only happens at sunset. Around a hundred bare-chested performers chant in rhythm as the sky turns orange behind the cliff-top temple, ending with a fire finale after dark. You cannot move it earlier. So the island claims your morning, Uluwatu claims your evening, and Bali hands you a perfect day in between.
The Morning: Glass Bottom Boat to Turtle Island
From Tanjung Benoa harbour, the glass bottom boat crosses to Turtle Island in about fifteen minutes. On the way, the crew pauses over the reef so you can watch fish dart beneath your feet — always the moment the kids go quiet, then very loud. On the island you meet rescued sea turtles up close and learn how the sanctuary cares for them.
A private boat is IDR 500,000 for the whole vessel, up to nine guests — one boat, one family, no strangers. Tours start from IDR 150K per person, and the full island visit takes around two to three hours door to door. If your children are hoping to release a baby turtle, please read our honest note on the hatchling release experience first: releases depend on the conservation schedule and hatchling availability, and we never guarantee them.
The Midday Reset
This is the part most itineraries get wrong. Do not rush from the boat straight into a car. Have a long lunch near the beach, swim at your hotel pool, let toddlers nap. Nusa Dua’s calm beaches are ten to twenty minutes from the harbour, which is exactly why this route suits families with young children so well. You will want fresh legs for the temple cliffs.
The Golden Hour: Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak Fire Dance
Leave Nusa Dua or Seminyak by 4 pm; the drive to Uluwatu takes 45–60 minutes depending on traffic. Arriving by 5 pm gives you time to walk the cliff path — the temple sits on limestone walls that drop straight into the Indian Ocean — before taking your seat in the amphitheatre. Sarongs are provided at the entrance, and do keep sunglasses and phones zipped away: the resident monkeys are quick and entirely unrepentant.
The performance begins around 6 pm and runs about an hour, timed so the fire scenes ignite just as the last light fades. Afterwards, many of our guests continue twenty to thirty minutes to Jimbaran Bay for a seafood dinner with their feet in the sand. Your driver waits either way.
