Nusa Penida is the big one — a fast-boat crossing of the open Badung Strait, then a full day of cliffs, viewpoints and stairs. The good news: you rarely have to pick. The waves: sheltered bay vs open strait
Turtle Island sits just off Tanjung Benoa, tucked inside a bay shielded by the reef and the Nusa Dua peninsula. On most mornings the water is close to flat. Our glass bottom boats cross in about ten minutes, slow enough for children to watch fish drift past under the glass floor the entire way. Guests who dread ferries tell us afterwards it felt like crossing a pond.
Nusa Penida is a different sea altogether. The fast boat from Sanur crosses the open Badung Strait in roughly 45 minutes, and on breezy days — especially in the dry-season trade winds of July and August — it can be a lively ride. Most travellers manage it happily. But if anyone in your group is prone to seasickness, take a tablet before boarding and keep small children on your lap for the crossing.
The distance: ten minutes vs a proper expedition
From a Nusa Dua or Tanjung Benoa hotel, the entire Turtle Island experience — pickup, boat, time on the island, back to your pool — fits inside three to four hours. Staying in Seminyak or Uluwatu? Nusa Penida is a genuine expedition: hotel to Sanur harbour, the crossing, then island drives between Kelingking, Broken Beach and Crystal Bay on roads that are slower than they look on a map. Plan for ten to twelve hours door to door, usually returning between five and six in the evening.
The energy: who is tired by three o’clock?
Turtle Island asks almost nothing of your legs. Toddlers, grandparents and anyone saving energy for the evening will be perfectly comfortable — it is the trip we recommend most to our families travelling with young children. A morning departure has you back at the hotel by early afternoon, with plenty of time to reach the Uluwatu Kecak dance for sunset or a seafood dinner in Jimbaran. Nusa Penida rewards energy. The famous Kelingking viewpoint involves a long, steep staircase, and the day means real walking in real heat. Teenagers love it. Anyone hoping for a relaxed afternoon will not get one.
