The short answer: the Island Explorer is our flexible entry tour — from IDR 150K per person, you meet us at Tanjung Benoa, cross by glass bottom boat, and keep the morning simple. The VIP Package is the full private day at USD 100 per person: Toyota Alphard hotel pickup with your own driver, a private boat, and timing built around your plans. If your hotel is in Nusa Dua, Uluwatu, or Seminyak and you want door-to-door ease, choose VIP; if you are staying near Tanjung Benoa or already have a driver, the Explorer is all you need.

I answer this question on WhatsApp more than any other, usually from families comparing the two on a phone screen by the pool. Here is the honest breakdown we give our own guests.

What each package actually includes

Island Explorer — build your own morning

The Explorer starts from IDR 150K per person. You arrange your own transport to our meeting point at Tanjung Benoa, board the glass bottom boat, watch the reef glide under your feet, and spend relaxed time on Turtle Island with the resident sea turtles. Prefer not to share? A private glass bottom boat is IDR 500K per boat for up to nine guests — often the best value on the beach for a family or two couples travelling together. Full options are on our tours and packages page.

VIP Package — the door-to-door private day

The VIP Package is USD 100 per person, complete. That covers a Toyota Alphard with a private driver from your hotel, the private boat crossing, a guided island visit at your pace, and the return transfer. No meeting points, no negotiating on the beach, no shared schedule. It is the package most of our Australian family guests choose, and the one we detail on packages with hotel pickup.

Who each one suits

Families with young children lean VIP, and for good reason: the day starts at your lobby, the boat is yours alone, and nap time can shape the schedule instead of fighting it. Our family Turtle Island experience page walks through what the visit looks like with toddlers in tow. Couples staying in Nusa Dua or Benoa itself often pick the Explorer — the crossing is minutes away, and the saving funds a long lunch afterwards.

One thing that surprises guests: neither package requires watersports. Banana boat rides (IDR 110K) and jet ski sessions (IDR 235K) are optional add-ons from our watersports menu, never a condition. Plenty of guests come purely for the turtles and the boat.

Five questions that decide it

  1. Where is your hotel? Nusa Dua, Uluwatu, or Seminyak — VIP removes an hour or more of logistics. Walking distance to Tanjung Benoa — Explorer wins.
  2. Private boat or shared? VIP is always private. On the Explorer, private is an easy IDR 500K-per-boat upgrade.
  3. What comes after? If you are chasing the Uluwatu sunset or a Jimbaran dinner, the VIP driver simply carries on with you.
  4. Who is travelling? Grandparents, babies, or anyone who prefers a seat waiting at every step — VIP.
  5. How do you budget? Explorer prices per person from IDR 150K; VIP is a flat USD 100 per person for the whole arrangement. Current numbers always live on our price page.

Timing — and the Uluwatu sunset question

Almost every guest asks what time the tour finishes, because the classic plan is turtles in the morning, Uluwatu Kecak at sunset. Both packages fit. Morning departures usually have you done by early afternoon, with time for lunch before the drive south. On the VIP Package the timing flexes around you — we map the whole route in our full-day South Bali itinerary. Same-day and next-day bookings are usually possible when boats are available; message us and we confirm quickly.

Can you add a baby turtle release?

Sometimes — and we will always tell you straight. Hatchling releases depend on the conservation schedule and on hatchlings actually being ready, so no operator can honestly guarantee one for a specific date. If a release is running during your visit, we can build it into either package. Read how it really works on our hatchling release tour page before you set your heart on it.

Car upgrades and other quotes

Beyond the Alphard, we run three vehicle tiers: the Toyota Innova Zenix, the Alphard itself, and the Denza D9 — a high-end electric seven-seater for guests who want the quietest ride in Bali. Upgrade pricing, along with transfers from areas we have not listed, is quoted on request via WhatsApp. And if Bali is only the beginning, the same team runs 3D2N Komodo trips one hour’s flight away — see Turtle Island to Komodo.
