How the two options actually work
Both boats do the same crossing: a slow cruise from Tanjung Benoa beach over the shallow reef, fish feeding through the glass panels, then a stop at Turtle Island to meet the resident sea turtles before cruising back. The whole experience takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours door to door on the water.
The difference is who is on board. A private glass bottom boat is your group only — you pick the departure time, the captain waits while your kids linger at the turtle enclosures, and nobody else’s schedule touches yours. A shared departure groups you with other travellers at fixed times, which keeps the per-person price low but means the boat moves when the group moves.
The maths: private gets cheaper as your group grows
At IDR 500,000 per boat for up to 9 guests, the private option stops being a splurge surprisingly fast:
- Couple (2 people): IDR 250,000 each private, versus from IDR 150,000 each shared. You pay a premium of about IDR 200,000 total for a boat to yourselves — worth it on a honeymoon, optional otherwise.
- Family of 4: IDR 125,000 each. Private is now cheaper than most shared seats, and you can time the trip around nap schedules.
- Group of 6: around IDR 83,000 each — less than a beachside lunch.
- Full boat of 9: roughly IDR 56,000 each. At this point shared makes no sense at all.
Many operators around Tanjung Benoa quote per-person rates that run several times higher than this once you add extras, so always confirm whether a quote is per boat or per person. - You are skipping watersports entirely and just want the boat-and-turtles experience without being bundled into a group doing banana boat rides.
- You are booking same-day or next-day and need flexibility if plans shift.
- There are four or more of you — the per-person maths simply wins.

When shared makes sense
Shared departures suit solo travellers, backpacking couples, and anyone whose priority is the lowest possible per-person price over schedule control. You will still see the reef, still visit the island, still get the same crossing. Just come with a flexible mindset: departures run to the group’s timetable, and busy mornings in high season can mean a short wait on the beach.
Two honest notes before you book either boat
First, on the turtles: Turtle Island is a visit-and-learn stop, and we ask all guests to follow the crew’s guidance around handling. Second, many guests ask about releasing baby turtles. Hatchling releases depend on the conservation schedule and whether hatchlings are actually ready — it is seasonal and never guaranteed, so we will tell you honestly what is possible on your date rather than promise it.
